Menagerie

white rabbit sits and watches time run past,
sees the parade reeling down the rabbit-hole.
he hops nervously from foot to foot,
checks his watch,
and ponders how people come and go
in the strangest ways
here.

orange tiger licks his lips
impatiently waiting to pounce.
he stretches and wonders
how long till feeding time.

white rabbit waits for his tea
and nibbles a tart expectantly.

brown caterpillar takes a puff from his hookah,
contemplates the world beneath his mushroom.
white rabbit goes too fast, he thinks.
he muses on his transformation
and exhales.

white rabbit lost his fan, somewhere.
it’s getting too hot in here
he says.

black dog barks
and runs after his own tail,
hears someone calling him home
and away he goes.
